Data scientists are instrumental in various aspects of engineering. Among many things, they predict the best new diabetes treatment to identify and even thwart national security threats. Data scientists combine computer science, modeling, statistics, analytics, and math skills—along with sound business sense—to discover the answers to major questions that help organizations make objective decisions.
A data scientists’ role is to understand how data can help the businesses’ needs. They design data modeling processes, create algorithms and predictive models to extract the data the business needs, and help analyze the data and share insights with peers.
Data scientists also need skills in the STEM field. Statistical analysis, or identifying patterns in data in necessary. In addition, machine learning, or implementing algorithms and statistical models to enable a computer to automatically learn from data is needed. Skills in computer science and programming are also necessary for a data scientist. Computer science is required as data scientists need to apply the principles of artificial intelligence, database systems, numerical analysis, and software engineering. Data scientists also need to be comfortable with coding in a variety of languages.
Data science is a broad field of study. Data analysts manipulate data sets and use them to identify trends and reach conclusions to inform strategic business decisions. Data engineers clean, aggregate, and organize data from disparate sources and transfer it to data warehouses. Business intelligence specialists identify trends in data sets. Data architects design, create, and manage an organization’s data architecture.
Data science is a broad and diverse field and is necessary for the growth of technology.
